Engine Room Simulator

Scope :

  • This course is classroom‐based and designed for the ship’s engineering personnel. The course relies heavily on the use of the simulators as tools to learn engine room resource management.
  • certification and Watch keeping for seafarers STCW1978 as amended.

General objectives :

  • Familiarisation with the use of instrumentation and controls used in the modern merchant ship engine rooms . Awareness of the need for adequate pre‐planning, the use of lists of control and the time scales involved in the procedures laid down in the engine room.
    • Understanding and awareness of correct watch keeping procedures
    • Understanding of the way in which machinery units are interdependent.
    • Experience in identifying operational problems and trouble –shooting them.
    • The ability to make decisions, which promote the safety and efficiency of and operational plant.

Prerequisites:

  • Entry to the course is open to students with basic training and knowledge as well as naval engineers wishing to improve their knowledge and understanding of the operation and control of the installation of machines of a modern merchant ship.
  • The experience of the student on duty at sea in a merchant ship engine room will be enhanced and strengthened by the structured activities carried out in this course.
